The first consultation with a phytotherapist generally lasts one hour. The phytotherapist begins by obtaining a detailed description of the condition that is of most concern to the patient, after which time is given to obtain a full medical, family, diet, and lifestyle history. The consultation ends with a general physical (blood pressure, blood glucose, temperature, etc.) and a specific physical examination pertinent to the patient's main complaint (heart and lung auscultation, urine analysis, etc.).
After the consultation, a treatment protocol will be designed for the patient consisting of herbal medicine, diet and lifestyle advice. This protocol is presented to the patient, explained in detail and adjustments can be made with the patient's input.
With the patient's 'go-ahead', the herbal medicine is prepared and dispensed. The medicine most commonly prescribed are herbal teas and tinctures. Creams, ointments, or oils are also made for patients with skin conditions. No two patients receive the same prescription.
After the consultation, the phytotherapist will review case notes and, if necessary, formulate a written advice sheet, including a necessary follow-up plan, supplements needed, referral letters, etc.
